years of avoiding public offices and speech clubs in high school, I had
the dubious honor of giving the Valedictorian speech.
The big day arrived. Seven hundred of my classmates and our 3,500
guests filled the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Though I had
prepared and rehearsed my speech, I was shaking, terrified of looking
foolish and embarrassing my family. Despite my anxiety, trembling
voice, nausea, and buckling knees, I managed to survive that
unforgettable day.
During my studies at West Point and my military and corporate careers,
I've had plenty of opportunities to develop my skills, make
presentations, and get more comfortable expressing myself with
individuals and groups. Although presenting becomes easier over
time, the butterflies have never disappeared for me. In fact, a little
fear is a good thing especially when I was jumping out of airplanes!
Healthy fear keeps us alert, aware, and always improving our skills.
I always laugh when people tell me there is no way they can make a
speech, give a presentation, or speak to a group. We're constantly
presenting ourselves everyday whether selling a product or service,
positioning ourselves as the best hire in interviews, speaking up in a
meeting, or just recommending an idea to our boss. Everyday is a
new opportunity to present our best selves and what we have to offer.
